Frequently Asked Questions

Recommended Smoke Alarm Placement

The legislation changes as of January 1st, 2017 will require some residential properties (in some states) to have a photoelectric smoke alarm in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms and at least one on every storey of a multi level property, in the most likely route to exit. To be compliant, a 3 bedroom, 2 storey house will likely need 5 smoke alarms, possibly more depending on floor layout.

Not all smoke alarms are created equal.

Smoke alarms are required by law and new legislation as of January 2017 in some states require that all residential homes have photoelectric smoke alarms installed when a smoke alarm is replaced or installed. The legislation will require1 a smoke alarm to be installed in every bedroom & on each storey AND

Must be photoelectric alarms (Australian Standard AS 3786-2014)
Not also contain an ionisation sensor
Interconnected to every other smoke alarm
Powered by the mains electricity supply or a non-removable battery with a 10-year battery life

What this means is that a lot of the alarms that are currently being sold are no longer compliant and may not be as safe. Don’t put your family’s lives or your tenants lives at risk! Furthermore, if you’re not compliant you may not be insured.

Buy our fully compliant smoke alarms online now and be protected.

Note: An alarm currently connected to the mains power supply must be replaced by another alarm connected to the mains power supply and a qualified electrician is necessary for this.

Required in Queensland by Jan 1 2022 for residential rental properties and by Jan 1 2027 for all residential properties.

Smoke Alarms Australia

Finding a photoelectric smoke alarm that’s powered by a 10 year non-removable battery which can be interconnected wirelessly can be tough. We’ve done the hard work for you and attempted to source the best and legally compliant smoke alarms. We can deliver our smoke alarms to every city in Australia.

Interconnected Smoke Alarms

Wireless Interconnected Smoke Alarms

Interconnected smoke alarms mean that if one smoke alarm goes off, then all other alarms will also go off. Wherever you are in the property, you are sure to be alerted. This is particularly important whilst you are asleep and a fire starts on another floor or at the farthest part of the property since you may not hear the alarm in the immediate vicinity of the fire that sounded the alert.

The photoelectric smoke alarms sold on this site can be interconnected wirelessly and are therefore ideal for installation into an existing home. There is no need for an electrician, saving you costly installation and interconnection fees for wiring cables from one to another, which might be particularly expensive in a multi-storey residence interconnecting downstairs to upstairs.

Smoke Alarm Placement

Smoke alarms ideally should be on the ceiling and not be within:

30cm of a corner of a wall and the ceiling or at the top of angled ceilings.
30cm of a light
40cm of an air-conditioning unit/vent or a ceiling fan.

There are special requirements for stairways, sloping ceilings, and ceilings with exposed beams.

Avoid installing smoke alarms:

in space with dead air. This is where the air can be trapped and will stop smoke from getting to the alarm such as between exposed beams or joists.
near fans, air-conditioners, windows or doors since too much air movement may stop smoke from reaching the alarm.
in or near kitchens and bathrooms where smoke from cooking or steam can set off accidental alarms.
in insect infested areas since some alarms can be accidentally triggered by insects flying into them.
